How successful is a vasectomy reversal?

Dr. Richard Heppe, TUCC

The success of vasectomy reversal is highly dependent on the amount of time that has elapsed since the vasectomy was performed. If it has been less than 5 years, success rates in obtaining sperm in the ejaculate are over 90 percent. At 20 years the success rate is up to 75 percent. Other factors can affect the overall success rate, as well. An evaluation by a urologist is needed to fully assess the patient.

Does a vasectomy reversal change a man’s sex drive or ability to have an erection?

A vasectomy reversal has no impact whatsoever on a man’s sex drive or his ability to have an erection. The volume of the ejaculation, however, may increase slightly after this procedure.

When will I know if the vasectomy reversal surgery has worked?

Sperm normally return to the ejaculate within three months after a vasectomy reversal, although it can take as little as two weeks or as long as six months to see sperm in ejaculate.

How long until I can have sex after vasectomy reversal surgery?

We recommend no strenuous activity or sexual intercourse for 10 days following a vasectomy reversal.
